CURRICULUM

Teaching and Learning

Guiding Principles

Our school provides a happy and secure environment in which students are able to value and enjoy learning. The curriculum is designed to cater for individual needs. We believe students will grow in confidence and self-esteem as a result of:

Achieving mastery of the curriculum, particularly in English and Mathematics.
Developing intellectual, personal, social, physical and creative abilities.
Learning to work effectively, as individuals and as members of a team.
Acquiring decision making, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

We believe children will:

Become increasingly responsible for themselves, for others and for their environment.
Have a strong sense of belonging, in a community which values, cares for and respects them.

A key feature of the school is the emphasis we give to creating and maintaining a community atmosphere. This is achieved through a caring, approachable staff that provides individual attention to each child. Maple Street Primary School believes we can best prepare students for secondary education and a full and rewarding life by promoting basic skills, confidence and enjoyment of work and learning.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

Thinking Processes

Within these programs the school offers specialist Music, ICT , Auslan and Physical Education programs, a Perceptual Motor Program, Information Technology in the classroom and integration facilities and programs. The school positively and actively encourages students with learning difficulties and caters for gifted and talented students.
The Maple Street school community is actively involved in school programs, maintenance and improvements. The grounds provide abundant space for active and passive recreation in a picturesque setting. Improved buildings and learning technology hardware and software have prepared Maple Street for a well-resourced and bright future.
The school has strong connections to local sporting organisations. Our children play a wide variety of sports outside of the school environment - these connections are strongly fostered by the parents and teachers here at the school.

Future Directions

Maple Street Primary is about to merge with Golden Square Primary on the Maple Street site. The Region is about to appoint an architect to draw up the plans for the new school. The plans will be specific to our site to make sure we use the space available to its best advantage. Both school communities will be able to have input during this time. It is envisaged that this process will take the remainder of 2009. Next year the work will go to tender, a builder appointed and work will commence. The current building will be able to be in use for part of the construction phase. After the building is completed the site will be fully landscaped with the new school fully ready by end of 2011, or early 2012. The new school will have a new name and a new uniform. The two Principals, from Maple St and Laurel St, will Co-Principal for the first year while the new school council is formed. After 12 months the principal position will be advertised as normal DEECD procedure. Teachers from both schools will form the staff of the new school.

The new school will be ‘open plan’ which translates as shared learning spaces. Students will be organised into learning communities of app. 100 students. Within that ‘sub-school’ students will have their own grade teacher who will still be their main teacher and parent’s first point of contact. The advantage of open plan is that students have greater access to facilities plus the flexibility to tap into the expertise of other teachers. Students will stay in their sub-school for a number of years giving them the security of familiarity with teachers, other students and the learning area.
